About The Nagles
The Mountain Magnolia Inn opened in May, 1999 after an exciting restoration project which was featured in “This Old House Magazine” under the Nagle family management and continues reflecting to this day their interests and values. Karen is the creative element on the team; daughter, Dana, a professional landscaper and environmental educator, lovingly tends the grounds; Pete (1947-2017) dealt with the marketing and business sides of the business, was highly involved in the town and his investment management business and was the resident jokester. The Nagle family’s environmental consciousness is reflected in their operation of the Inn.
The Nagles have always loved the mountains and discovered this property on a summer vacation in 1996. They bought it as a mountain vacation home with the idea of ultimately retiring here from their life in Charlotte where Pete was in the investment management business with a bank and Karen was active in their local community. Both daughters, Dana and Jenna, were away at college and son, Phil was married and living in Ohio. As they learned of the fascinating history of the home and the town of Hot Springs they ultimately decided to restore the house to original state and open an Inn.
Karen still regularly takes advantage of the beautiful outdoors and the area’s adventure opportunities by enjoying activities including hiking, swimming in mountain creeks, sitting around campfires with friends, floating down the river and Scottish Country Dancing weekly with her friends. She also loves restoring old properties like the former Jesuit Retreat Center, now Laughing Heart Lodge, which she operates with her best friend, Karen Moore. The Inn considers Laughing Heart Lodge to be a “sister property” that focuses on providing a venue for retreats and gatherings .
Pete’s sudden passing from this life after a short, acute illness in February of 2017 left his family and the Mountain Magnolia family in a state of stunned sadness; however, they all strive to continue his tradition of providing an exceptional experience and excellent service to all our lodging and dining guests.
